Today i did the email tutorial and clicked on the link (http://gateway.lib.ohio-state.edu/tutor/les9/). There were 6 topics on "E-Mail Basics" and a pop quiz question and the end on each topic.

1. Addresses:
Q - Which of the following elements must be included in an email address?
A - E-mail addresses always include the username (or account) as well as the domain name of the computer(s) that provide mail services.

2. Messages:
Q - To check for new e-mail, you must?
A - You must provide your password to check e-mail. Your e-mail address is not needed for this task. The POP mail server address was provided when you configured your e-mail program.

3. Attaching Files:
Q - If you don't know what kind of computer or software your recipient has, send an attachment as?
A - A plain text (ASCII) file can be read by anyone, regardless of what type of computer (PC or Macintosh) or software they have.

4. Managing Your E-Mail:
Q - You can transfer messages to another mailbox (in Eudora) by?
A - Both. Use the Transfer menu to file messages as you read them, or set up a filter to place certain messages into a special mailbox automatically.

5. Signatures
Q - To disable your signature file?
A - Both techniques work. You can turn signatures off in the program's Options or delete it from individual messages in both Eudora and Outlook Express.

6. Mail Etiquette
Q - "Flames" are?
A - 'Flames' are remarks that provoke arguments or anger. They can be avoided by taking a careful look at your message before it is sent.

Email Lists vs Discussion boards

An advantage of discussion boards over e-mail is that the messages are archived and don't reside in your e-mail account, taking up your memory. The messages can often be threaded according to a particular discussion. You decided if you want to be part of the discussions. Where as an email list goes to everyone in the list whether you want the information or not.

Discussion Boards
A discussion board ("bulletin board") is where you can leave and expect to see responses to messages you have left. Or you can just read the board. For the purpose of facilitating communication among individuals and groups.

Newsgroup
An Internet "site" centered around a specific topic or course. Some newsgroups can "thread" discussion so there can be various topics centered around a central theme.

Email List
An email list is a way of having a group discussion by electronic mail. Also used to distribute announcements to a large number of people. A mailing list is very much like a conference on a bulletin board system, except the conversation comes to you in your e-mail box. Each time a member of the list posts a reply to the conversation, it is distributed to the e-mail box of every member of the list.

1. What information about a user’s email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?
The username indicates the sender of the message. Sometimes, but not always the username is the sender’s name. There are also automated senders, with usernames such as ‘no reply’, ‘unsubscribe’ or ‘info’ also give clues as to the sender. The domain name can sometimes gives an idea of the country (ie. @com.au represents Australia) or attribution of the message.

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the ‘cc’, ‘bcc’ and ‘reply all’ functions of email?
The ‘cc’ (carbon copy) enables a copy of the message to be sent to other interested recipients. Instead of sending separate emails to each individual. It is not the main intended recipient and that the message is for information only and not directly intended for that person’s action.
The function of the ‘bcc’ (blind copy) recipient is when there is no desire or reason for the main recipient to know that a copy of the message has been sent to that person. Or you do not want the main recipient to know, the “bcc” email address.
The ‘reply all’ function is ideal for replying to the sender and all the recipients of the original message which appear in the ‘To’ section of the message header. It ensures that everybody is aware of your response.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?
Attachments need to be in the correct format for the receiver to open them. They should be of a small file size as some internet users may have a slow internet speed making it near impossible to download large attachments. The default attachment choice for your mail program should be set to MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions).

4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?
I have set up rules for communications coming from certain senders and with certain keywords in the subject titles. They are automatically moved to folders for action or archived until I need them. The purpose of this is to help me be better organized with my workload and clears up my inbox for emails that need immediate action.

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?
I have folders and subfolders, which enables me to move selected items from my main Inbox. This makes it easier to locate correspondence, as any search is typically topic related. It also keeps my Inbox relatively small and forces me to either filed, archived or deleted emails.

I went to http://centralops.net/co

I found that there were 19 hops and that the average time in milliseconds from the tools site to the curtin server was 246ms. The IP number for the host name curtin.edu.au was 134.7.179.10 , which i'm not sure if this is correct. However, reading the discussion board i found that most others also got similar answers.

Module 1 - File Transfer Proctocol (FTP)

I downloaded Fetch (http://fetchsoftworks.com). I found this program to be rather simple to use. I just typed recall.curtin.edu.au into the prompt box and then i was connected.
The were 2 folders:
1.MSC
2.Rob

I found the "read me" file in "MSC" folder. I then saved the file to my computer and i found that "CAPITALIZATION MATTERS!".
I self tested and found i had the correct answer.

Module 1 - Telnet

I was having trouble going to the library.deakin.edu.au link from my internet browser (Safari). Then it was suggested on the disccusion board to type telnet://library.deakin.edu.au into Safari. And it work immediately. I was then asked "What kind of Terminal are you using?" V > VT100 W > NCSA VT100 I chosse "V" and was then i was ask to confirm. "Please confirm: are you using a VT100 or compatible terminal? ( y/n )" I chosse Y and the program loaded.

I found 2 Books by the author Bennahum. I self tested myself and found that the correct title of the book was Managed Care : Financial Legal and ethical issues.
